Who is K. T. Conte

K.T. Conte, a devotee of the written word and all things wild and fascinating, first discovered her passion for books at the tender age of two. Even then, as an avid reader, her journey to becoming an author was already on the horizon. An African-American author with a flair for breathing life into stories, K.T. holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and a law degree from Suffolk University Law School.

While she is a licensed and practicing attorney, K.T.'s first love has always remained books. The enchanting dance of words across a page and the powerful narratives they weave continues to captivate and inspire her every day. Over the years, she has shared her Massachusetts home with a delightful blend of characters - the enchanting specters in the closet, her loving husband Everett, a couple of mischievous building fairies, and her beloved daughter, Ella. Each one adds a unique strand to the tapestry of her intriguing life and infuses her writing with depth and relatability. From her early days as a bookworm to the accomplished author she is today, K.T. Conte continues to live her passion, creating worlds that thrill, excite, and touch the hearts of her readers.
“If you think about it, the very first vacation anyone ever takes is in a book. You can go hundreds of miles, go across the world, visit distant galaxies from the comfort of your living room couch. I can remember the best afternoons, night and into some mornings buried in a book. I want to bring that experience to everyone. Give you a glimpse of the world I have created in my head!”

A Moment with K. T.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

It's hard to say actually. I've been writing since I was in high school, writing poetry like any other angsty teenager and it began to evolve into short stories and plays. But I really began writing novel-sized stories right about I took the bar exam. Stressed out and looking for an escape, my writing was my happy place. It's a been a journey ever since.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I'm a lawyer by day and a writer by night. So needless to say, sleep can be an issue. But I love my stories and I love my characters. You spend time with the ones that you love. And I love my husband too (he's standing behind me).

Where did the inspiration for the storyline in Awoke come from? For the characters you included?

It was a random night with friends when the inspiration came out of nowhere. It came from a simple question. “What if the Grim Reaper was human?” And I became a woman possessed fleshing out the idea that very night. As for the characters, they came to me as I fleshed out the plot line. But Katya was the original character I knew I wanted to have. A black female starring in a fantasy book which is truly rare.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

When I began writing this book, I was researched obsessed. The original idea came from anime (I'm an avid fan) and I mixed a bit of Caribbean folklore. To make sure that I was painting a clear picture and staying true, I researched the hell out of everything from the names, to using Greek and Arabic to create new names. I wanted to make sure that my world building was as diverse as I saw the real world before me.

What do you think makes a good story?

A story is good when you cannot think of anything else but to get to the end. That the plot, the characters, the action has been so riveting and exhilarating that you can't put it down. That you easily lose hours of your day within a blink and not realize it. That you've ignore your hunger because you just wanna read. That is a good story. Hope I created one for you!
